PREFECTIBLE OR FLAWED

The following paper was written as the result of a lengthy interaction I had with the Artificial Intelligence called Gemini.  Initially, I was asking why large cities voted primarily Democrat.  One of the reasons cited was that people with advanced academic degrees tended to live in big cities and vote Democrat.  Gemini gave several reasons for that, most of which I considered spurious.  I had all the experiences outlined by Gemini and yet identified as Republican.  After some of my challenges to the pop-psych explanations offered by Gemini, it led to the conclusion that there were differences in the basic assumptions about human nature that were being made. My assumption was that human beings were indelibly flawed and responsible for their choices which were the cause of their problems. In contrast, Gemini posited the Left’s utopian view that while humans were flawed, they were perfectible because it is not they but flawed social systems that were responsible for human problems. The following is a summary, written by Gemini, of the approximately 90 minute exchange of ideas that followed.  Perfect, I thought, for a NOBULL NEWSLETTER.

The Bifurcation of Human Nature:

Utopianism vs. Pragmatism in American Politics

The political landscape in the United States is fundamentally defined by clashing assumptions regarding human nature and the proper role of government in managing it. As explored in this discussion, the divide between the progressive Left (exemplified by the modern Democratic Party) and the conservative Right (exemplified by the contemporary Republican Party) is not merely about different policy preferences, but about two distinct, often mutually exclusive, psychological and philosophical worldviews.

This paper will explicate the progressive pursuit of Utopianism and Moral Purity that underlies Democratic policy, contrast it with the Pragmatism and Individual Responsibility central to the Republican approach, and analyze how this fundamental moral tension fuels the intense political phenomenon often labeled Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS).

Two Models of Human Nature

The policy goals of each party are downstream of their core beliefs about what causes human suffering and, critically, who is responsible for solving it.

1. The Progressive View: Flawed Systems, Perfectible Humans

The modern progressive worldview often posits that humans are fundamentally good, rational, or at least perfectible, but are corrupted or stunted by flawed systems and unjust structures.

•They view the locus of control of human behavior to be external to the individual. Suffering (poverty, inequality, anxiety, crime) is attributed primarily to forces outside the individual like systemic racism, economic market failures, patriarchy, corporate greed, or historical injustice.

The progressive approach effectively partitions the problem. The system is the source of the "wrong and bad," while the individual is merely the victim or symptom of that systemic flaw. The psychological flaw here is that such thinking allows the individual's own flaws (self-interest, poor choices, prejudice) to be minimized or excused, transferring the moral burden to the external environment.

This view requires a utopian leap of faith: that if the flawed structures are dismantled and replaced by rationally designed, equitable systems, human nature will flourish. The people who design and implement these new systems are implicitly assumed to be objective and free from the very self-interest and prejudice that plague the rest of society.  The policy makers holding this view are in the intellectually untenable position of believing that they are unaffected by the very structural problems they now propose to set others free.

2. The Conservative View: Flawed Humans, Necessary Constraints

The conservative worldview, rooted in classical philosophy and a view of life that posits that humans are inherently and permanently flawed—driven by self-interest, prone to error, subject to passion, and capable of both “right and good’ actions and "wrong and bad" actions.

Conservatives tend to see the locus of control of behavior as internal to the individual.  Problems originate primarily internal with the individual bearing personal responsibility for their moral choices and their self-discipline or lack thereof and secondarily within localized social units like family and community.

Because, for Conservatives, human nature is viewed as flawed, any large-scale, centralized attempt to perfect society is viewed as an act of intellectual hubris or "fatal conceit." Such attempts ignore the wisdom of tradition, the limits of human knowledge, and the inevitable unintended consequences caused by flawed policy-makers.

This leads to a preference for humble, constrained, and decentralized government and a reliance on proven institutions (rule of law, free markets, traditional morality to manage—not eliminate—the innate flaws of humanity.

The Progressive Utopian Drive for Moral Purity

The contemporary Democratic agenda is heavily influenced by a form of political perfectionism that seeks to impose a specific, overriding moral purity on society via policy.

A. The Supremacy of the Single Moral Foundation

The intellectual engine of this drive is the elevation of certain moral principles—primarily Fairness and Reciprocity (social justice/equity)—to the status of absolute, overriding values.

• Moral Absolutism: In this framework, any existing law, institution, or economic outcome that does not align with the principle of absolute, equitable justice is not merely inadequate; it is morally illegitimate and must be dismantled.

• Rejection of Trade-Offs: Political moderation or compromise is viewed as a moral failure because it sacrifices the achievement of the absolute ideal (e.g., compromising on a policy for absolute equity is seen as condoning injustice).

B. Policy for Systemic Perfection

This translates into policies designed for comprehensive systemic change and not incremental reform:

• Technocracy and Central Planning: A preference for large-scale, federal-level government solutions administered by “rational experts”. Policies like universal healthcare, comprehensive climate regulation, and aggressive wealth redistribution are seen as necessary, complex mechanisms to rewire the flawed capitalist system into a more equitable machine.

• Conceptual Conflation: Within academia and policy circles, this drive risks intellectual dishonesty as the moral goal (e.g., achieving equity) is conflated with the scientific fact. Researchers may engage in confirmation bias and motivated reasoning, selectively interpreting data to confirm the diagnosis of "systemic injustice" rather than challenging the utopian premise itself.

The Republican Alternative: Pragmatism and The Free Market

In direct opposition to the utopian drive, the Republican policy approach is rooted in pragmatic individualism and skepticism toward centralized power.

A. Policy Centered on Individual Responsibility

For Conservatives, the core policy principle is that the best mechanism for managing human flaws and maximizing human flourishing is individual freedom within a limited government framework.

• The Free Market as a Check on Flaw: The economic philosophy (supply-side economics, limited regulation) is based on the idea that free markets, decentralized power, and personal responsibility are the most effective means of harnessing self-interest (a permanent human flaw) toward collective good (innovation, wealth creation).

• Accountability: Policy is designed to enforce accountability and self-sufficiency. Welfare reform, tax cuts (to reward work), and deregulation are championed as ways to remove institutional dependency and force individuals to manage the consequences of their own choices.

Law and Order: Recognition that humans are, by their nature, flawed means they are expected to control their basic impulses as part of the social contract and are held personally responsible when they do not do so.  It is not society but the individual who is held responsible for their choices.

B. Incrementalism and Localism

Republicans generally reject large-scale "perfectionist" programs in favor of:

• Incremental Change: Conservatives hold a deep skepticism of rapid, comprehensive social engineering, preferring slow, organic growth and deference to established, time-tested institutions (churches, families, local government).

• Decentralization: An emphasis on states' rights and local control is a mechanism for diffusing political power, which is inherently distrusted because of the belief in human political flaw (the lust for power). By keeping power local, its destructive potential is limited.

The Political Collision: Utopianism Meets Trump

The extreme intensity of the progressive Left’s opposition to Donald Trump—often labeled Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS)—is best understood as the moral-perfectionist worldview colliding with the ultimate embodiment of political and personal imperfection.

The Offense of Impurity and Transgression

For those invested in the moral purity of the utopian project, Trump represents the active validation of the "bad" and "wrong" that must be purged from the system.

• Rejection of Norms: Trump's rhetoric is intentionally transactional, aggressive, direct, self-interested, and often imprecise. He deliberately violates the language, ethical, and behavioral norms that the progressive Left equates with civilized, rational governance.  He intentionally destroys the structure they try to impose through redefinition of words and demand to adhere to those definitions as factual.

• The Validation of Chaos: His success validated the very elements (America first nationalism, personal conviction vs group think, disregard for academic elitism) that the perfectionist project aims to suppress. His presence in the highest office suggests the utopian mission has not only failed but has been actively rejected as nonsensical by the electorate.

Moral Outrage as Psychological Defense

The resulting "hatred" is therefore less a policy disagreement and more a visceral moral and psychological defense mechanism.

• Existential Threat: When a politician embodies the opposite of one's core moral ideal (purity, equity, elitism), the opponent is perceived as an existential threat to the entire worldview. This triggers intense moral outrage amplification, where every perceived transgression is treated as an apocalyptic event.  And, for the Progressive, it is threat to their virtuous identity.

• Inability to Compartmentalize: The obsession with his personal flaws and rhetoric stems from an inability to compartmentalize policy from morality. If one believes politics must be morally pure, then a morally impure leader is seen as a contamination of the entire system, justifying an extreme, totalizing opposition.

Ultimately, the Left's intense aversion to Trump is the sound of the systemic, lock-step of communalism and utopian ideal shattering against the hard, paradoxical reality of flawed human nature and chaotic individualism that Trump so unapologetically personifies.
