THE TERRIBLE TOO’S

Did you ever wish you could be someone new

Because someone said you were always so “TOO”

TOO loud, TOO small, TOO fat or TOO dumb

And when they said it, it made you feel glum

They said, “You’re TOO selfish, TOO angry, TOO free”

And you looked at yourself and asked “What’s wrong with ME?”

Yes, there are some days when your feelings are large

When you want to rush forward and just yell out “Charge”.

But for each day like that there are days that are quiet

And you know that I’m right, you just can’t deny it.

So which one are you, the quiet or loud one?

You’re neither.  You’re both.  But you aren’t the TOO one!

“TOO” takes a picture of you at one point

And tries to convince you you’re all out of joint.

But a picture you’re not, a BE-ing you are

Just like a movie in which you are the star

Who can tell what the movie is like

By taking one picture of a sad little tyke.

You’re such a cry baby the picture will say

But that’s not what you’ll be on some other day

It’s important to know that there’s feelings galore

And you’ll feel them all, and even more.

So how can you be TOO angry or sad

When tomorrow you’ll also be happy or glad

You see, you were made with your parts mixed up right

But when they said “TOO”, it made you uptight.

So if someone called you TOO angry or mad

You bent over backwards to prove you weren’t bad

“I will make myself nice when it’s anger I feel.

What will it matter if my ‘me’ is not real?”

If people annoyed you, you’d always think twice

Until someone else said,  “You’re always TOO nice.”

Now that got you thinking, “What am I to be?

Whatever I am, I must be TOO ME!”

“My ‘me’ is TOO much or TOO little to please

I must watch my “me” so that nobody sees.”

Then it’s off to the doctor you’ll go, feeling ill

“You don’t feel your self?  Here, take this pill.”

“This pill will help you to be not TOO mad,

TOO nice or TOO needy, TOO happy, TOO sad.”

Then one day you’ll wake and your “me” will feel small

And no one will notice you’ve got no “me” at all.

All empty of meaning and purpose and glee

Nothing at all without your dear “me”.

So remember your feelings are all mixed up just right

And you’re not going to let that old TOO win the fight

You are not TOO much or TOO little at all

You’re just being you and that’s not bad at all

So, please, let that TOO word run right through your ears

Don’t let that TOO word make tears and big fears

Don’t let them TOO you, don’t listen to TOO

Because YOU are the best at YOU being YOU.
